About 10 years ago my son Gavin and I were passing through a neighboring town and noticed the Old Millstone Forge hiding in plain sight. We visited, joined their Museum Association and started forging the same day. He was just 10 yrs old and we instantly loved it. It was our father / son bonding activity for years. Over time we built our own forge in the backyard under a tent. We used an old chiminea and a hair drier to force air into a charcoal fire, It worked! With a heavy metal plate bolded to a stump as an anvil, we started forging knives from old lawnmower blades, truck springs and whatever else we reasoned might have enough carbon to hold an edge. The early knives were not great...
Today my little boy is all grown up and so has my forge. He is serving our country in the Army and my smithing skills and knives have improved considerably.
